It's cheap, healthy and filling, with a very nice atmosphere (despite the very out-of place big-screen TV's). Three of us had lunch (all-you-can-eat) and non-alcoholic drinks for under $40 with tip. The service was a bit slow at times; take your time and don't go when you're in a rush. I think this would be a fun place to come with older kids, too.

Lots of smaller bites to share, some soups and salads and a few entrees. We opted for the special and it was fantastic!
I had the white chocolate cheesecake and it came in a small round with raspberry coulis. I shared a Framboise (raspberry) wine with a friend. Two friends had the "apple pie" which was very disappointing. It is more like a dry, bland torte. One friend had the apple and toffee wine with it and it was delicious! Our other friend had the cinnamon bun. He loved it, but it looked kind of dry. It was not over powering.
It's not a bad place, but very expensive for what you get compared to others.
The tapas were great. We tried samosas, pakoras, and spring rolls. One person with us said the chicken satays were awesome. I would definitely go back.
The booths were stiff benches though. Would have been nice with banquette fabric padding to lean into for comfort.

I stopped here last week because I'm scouting out places to hold literary readings, and one of my fellow arts events organizers suggested I check out this place. I don't make a huge effort to seek out organic, healthy fare, but they do an awesome job in this establishment. I had the grilled apple and cheese sandwich, and it was positively delicious--and this is coming from someone who grew up eating hunted-down deer. Another bonus is that the owners promote the restaurant as a community meeting place as well, so if you have an organization that needs a space for a class or meeting, there's a nice set-up there. http://rhizomecafe.ca/

Until further notice most of Vancouver's professional dancers are not going to be dancing at this venue as Mona tried to enforce an "unwritten rule" that if a dancer makes over a certain amount of tips while performing at her restaurant, then the dancer will not be paid her regular wage. This happened to me last Friday night and all the dancers have signed a letter that was sent to Mona yesterday stating that until this "rule" is put to rest, no one will be dancing at the restaurant. Mona spoke to one of the dancers who politely called to make sure she received the letter and she freaked on the dancer and hung up on her. The dancer was so shocked that she was treated this way that she was shaking. Mona's Restaurant has a long standing reputation for bad service, over charging clients, and more recently fraud. Check the Vancouver Bellydance tribe for more information about this.

Decided to go out to the North Shore for dinner. Originally, we wanted to go to another restaurant in North Vancouver, but it was hosting a large party. So, we opted for another place in West Vancouver.

We did not have a reservation for the patio, so we sat in a booth by the window. We had a partial view which was nice. The waiter took forever to come over because he could not see us over the booth wall. I would think the host or manager would have told him we were there.

He was the only waitperson on the floor. There seemed to be only one chef preparing food. Service was extremely slow and the food was mediocre. My "wild" salmon entree was good, but the strawberry coulis was disappointing. It was suppose to come with a strawberry and papaya salsa, but it seemed to be drowning in a dessert coulis. My friend's free-run jerk chicken was disappointing. It was not roasted with a spice-rub, but marinated in dark sauce that looked like molasses or chutney.

The tapas of salmon lox, capers, and creme fraiche to start was good.

I think we will go back and give the restaurant another shot. The salads sounded good (scallop and bacon salad), as did the martini and slushie drink menu. I'll be sure to make a reservation for the patio. Most of the tapas are very basic and dull.

So far I'm considering that new place on kits beach or Cassis on Pender. Any ideas will be much appreciated.
The Robson one was disappointing to say the least. I was appauled the crepe filler had nail polish on. I remember working with food and nail polish is a no-no. All she did the whole time was complain about her job.

The crepe itself had minimal nutella and strawberries. Everything kept slidding out and falling apart. So disappointing when you are gung-ho for a crepe.

this disturbing occurence has happened twice to me this year, in two different cities. i'll begin with the most recent. yesterday, i went to the aberdeen center in richmond, and i ordered ramen noodles from some place in the food court. after waiting for 15 minutes for the darn things, i took my bowl back to my table, took a bite, and got an overpowering whiff of ammonia. i made everyone at my table smell my noodles to make sure i wasn't imagining it, and all confirmed that yes, my noodles reeked of ammonia and urged me to return them, which i did for a full refund. when i returned them, i was told that the water they used to boil the noodles had ammonia. i didn't get much more of an explanation. then i remembered that when i was in LA, my boss got some taro dim sum from chinatown and brought it into the office, and same thing--my eyes and mouth were burning from what could only be characterized as ammonia.

my husband said that he recalls his Chinese grandmother telling him a while back that this was some trick used in Chinese food, like to keep the noodles from getting soggy or something like that. anyway, it's disgusting. and probably poisonous.

anyone else experience something similar?

I too am very much against Starbucks, especially being from Vancouver where there is a Starbucks every ten meters on some blocks (no joke). I must say that I agree with a lot that is written in this discussion group, but what really bothers me the MOST is how completely unoriginal and boring and plain depressing it is to see so many God Damned Starbucks in one city. I hated private school because we all had to wear the same uniforms…no self-expression allowed. That’s what having this pretentious coffee shop every where reminds me of…some unoriginal corporate conservatives messed-up idea of making sure all shops look the same, serve the same stuff and hire the same employees (contrary to their claim of having a hiring practice that doesn’t discriminate, more on THAT later). Maybe I best not compare this coffee shop to staunchly stuffy uniforms (those at least have a small element of sex appeal, Starbucks is ANYTHING but sexy), A better comparison would be to clones. Living in a city full of walking talking clones would be enough to want to hang myself (especially if they were clones of myself) so why would I want to walk a city where there are store duplicates after store duplicated and nothing else (that’s what a lot of cities are turning into).

But to get to the part where I say something good about Starbucks (I know, I know it’s hard to believe our enemy has something redeemable about it) I’ll start by telling you that I used to work at Starbucks (please forgive me Lord) so I am speaking from experience. I also used to work at Bean Around the World, Blendz and Torrefatzione Italia (which incidentally is now owned by Starbucks too).

Out of all these coffee shops Starbucks is the only place that offered me full benefits as a part-time worker (less then 20 hours a week even) after a few months working there, and offered me stock options. I also got a raise in pay regularly enough that working there for a long time was rewarded AND I could pick up hours working at any of the other Starbucks in the city anytime I wanted if I wasn’t getting enough shifts at my location. In other words I was respected as an employee (partner they called us) and was rewarded for my hard work and was given more work if I needed it. Starbucks also donated money to the organizations I was involved in if I submitted formal request or took part in that organization’s march or protest.

As a starving student in my late teens early twenties this kind of job was unheard of, as a matter of fact after I left Starbucks I couldn’t afford to get my teeth cleaned for a good two years (don’t look so grossed out, I still brushed!) A lot of cool “grass roots” organic local coffee shops pay their employees next to nothing and don’t get enough regular customers to fill the tip jar. Another bonus to working at Starbucks—tips. Because there are always so many customers (ones that tip well too) we got a tip pay out every off-week (the one where we didn’t get a pay check) and the tips were good, not like witnessing good, but good enough to buy my groceries or weekend of partying. This was a lifesaver for me.

The drawback to working there though was the “cult” like feeling of the work environment. Or the “clickiness”, to be gentler. Everyone has a certain “lingo” and style…it might be too rude or politically incorrect to say that they mostly hire gay guys, fat chicks and artsy-fartsy types but what the hell I’ll say that it mostly holds true. There is nothing wrong with this practice per-say (In my opinion those are the coolest most “with-it” people I know) but it still is a form of discrimination to only hire certain types of people. It goes back to the whole I don’t like clones point I made earlier. I hate “clicks” and I hate groups of people who think that they are better and more knowledge then everyone else. The majority of Starbucks employees think that they are more knowledgeable then you “oh lowly customer who knows nothing about coffee” are. There is always this super “I am so cool” vibe at Starbucks and the staff get that way because they are totally brainwashed in the training part of the hiring. I know, I went through it first hand.

You go through this week of intense Starbucks classes that include coffee tasting; this is where you sit (and I am not joking here) swish coffee around on the palette of your tongue and spit it in a cup (like wine tasting) and describe to your fellow new hires what room of the house the taste reminds you of, or what colour you think of when you taste it. This is also where you are told respectively by the managers that human beings cannot taste “bitter” that there is no such thing as “bitter” and anyone (customer) who says that the coffee is bitter is actually uninformed and wrong.

You are also told respectively that the coffee is not “burnt” and anyone who thinks it tastes like that doesn’t understand the roasting process of the beans and is also uneducated and not as informed as YOU are, because in other words-- “you are a partner at Starbucks therefore you are in fact smarter then the customer”.

Needless to say I got sick of being around pretentious know-it-alls who “take it in their corporate slave asses everyday by management, and “give-it” in the asses to every customer who has a different preference for coffee that may not be the All mighty Godly perfect cup of coffee “Starbucks Coffee”. I got in Doggy-Style position for the Starbucks routine brainwashing sessions myself when I worked there (hey we all get desperate for a pay check at some point). The best of these sessions was the “Yayy frapacchino” hoop-la where all of us “Partners” got to miss a shift of work to celebrate Frappecchino beverages together with fun and games and “quickest drink maker” competitions.

We were made to wear Hawaiian flower chains and my store manager even put an inner tube on her head to fit in with the summer theme. This all sounds harmless, but trust me it’s not it’s just one of the many examples of Starbuck’s weird employee “bonding” and team building strategies all in the name of making a HUGE profit. I mean huge! Each and every cup of coffee you buy is only worth 3 or 4 cents (they told us that too) and most drinks sell between 3 and 6 dollars there, so really paying your staff well is nothing to pat them on the backs too much for…but this day in age it’s really hard to find a job that pays more then minimum wage and gives you enough hours to survive on, especially coffee shops.

My long winded ranty-ness is just to say that Yes Starbucks Sucks, for all the reasons I listed and more…but there is intelligence behind their domination of the market, they do truly respect their employees (especially if you are a gay guy, fat chick, or artsy-fartsy type) and I would recommend working there over Blenz to young student types ANYDAY but that my friends is a story for another blog day.

Until then keep up the good anti-Starbucks work, but remember to be more understanding of the people that are working there too, just because they are arrogant and self-righteous preachy little coffee snobs who will resort to wearing inner-tubes on their heads all in the name of a product launching campaign doesn’t mean that they don’t have feelings or financial needs for survival too.Hey, I was there once, and I must say I have A LOT more respect for the Barista (at any coffee shop) then I did before I worked at one.

Even with the "New Look" it's lame.
The Bread Garden is definitely not like it used to be. In the early 90’s it was really popular because it was one of the first restaurants of its kind (fast food that is wholesome and re-heated) it was a novelty and a neat experience to go to one. Plus, they were everywhere so it was really easy to grab something in your neighborhood. The new renovations make the atmosphere way “cooler” then it used to be though. I love the tables and slick black chairs. The style is a nice upgrade…but contrary to popular belief that people in Vancouver solely care about image, the quality of foods and the prices matter too. This is where Bread Garden gets a failing grade. The food (even though it looks fancy) tastes no different then the “left-overs” you pull out of your buddy’s parent’s house fridge on the weekend. The prices leave you feeling ripped-off every time you consume one of their re-heated “cardboard tasting” entrées. One of the many examples of this; I was mislead to think that their pudding would satisfy my rich home-made creamy chocolate craving because it was displayed in a cute sundae cup with curly scrumptious looking Belgian chocolate shavings sprinkles “just-so” on top. It also had a ridiculous price so I thought “this will be awesome” at that price-- needless to say the pudding sucked balls and tasted no different then a snack-pack I could have stolen from my kid-brother’s lunch bag. Some times pretty presentation doesn’t make the food more appetizing it just ends up being misleading and you feel more ripped off when you are done. Bread Garden is a perfect example of this. Don’t be sucked in.

Dosa Hut - best south Indian food in Van for cheap cheap cheap

Sha-Lin noodle house. this place is always packed . they make the noodle right in front of you. tres yummy

Jamaica Pizza jerk - OK he is a good friend of mine, but he makes great soup and has vegan ham and pineapple pizza.

the Foundation - largest plate of nachos in Van, lots of yummy entrees but this place shines most for it's lunches and no one goes there.

Amazing sushi. (on Davie near Granville) - a hole in the wall that has great sushi and is very affordable.

so my question is there any good Mexican restaurants in Van. i tyred Mission burritos the other day expectation to a SF style burrito. don't bother going there. I know one spot on the drive called Taco Loco. it has good mole sauce (it's all about the sauce) but it is a little inconsistent and ghetto.

Already in its first week it seems to have attracted a friendly, relaxed crowd that I think will become devotees.

I definitely recommend it.
I like to try Indian sweets wherever I go, but so far the best one I've tried is at the corner of 41st & Fraser. It's called the Bahaia Sweet Shop.

In addition to a huge selection of fresh Indian sweets, they are also a restaurant and serve really good Indian food.

It's a very simple place, with no decor to speak of and only four tables, but the food is great and the price is good. They have excellent samosas, 3 for a dollar, which is becoming harder to find these days. They have both veggie and non veggie food.

Check it out!

THE EXCELLENT EATERY
3431 W Broadway
Vancouver BC V6R 2B

General Comments:
More attention needs to be placed on sanitation as well as staff needs to be aware of basic foodsafe procedures. It is strongly recommended that all kitchen staff obtain their Foodsafe certificate. Reinspection to take place Monday, April 11.

Food Not Protected From Contamination - Microbiological:

When storing foods in the cooler, all raw meats/poultry/seafood are to be stored below ready to eat foods (vegetables and already cooked items).

Raw meats were found being stored above ready to eat foods.

Inadequate Cooling and/or Refrigerated Storage of Potentially Hazardous Food(s):

Large buckets of chicken and crab were found sitting out at room temperature. These were thrown out during the inspection. The small prep cooler is operating at 5-6C. The temperature of all coolers must be 4C or less. The owner indicated that no perishable items were stored in this cooler however, there was two plastic containers of crab found in the cooler. These items were removed and placed in another cooler. This cooler must be repaired so that it is operating at the required 4C.

The amount of time potentially hazardous foods is kept out at room temperature must be minimized. These foods should either be kept cold (below 4C) or hot (above 60C).

Improper Cleaning, Sanitizing of Equipment and Utensils:
All coolers need to be cleaned inside and out.

Food Not Protected - General:

An extremely dirty apron was found placed on top of fish thawing in the cooler. This was removed during the inspection. Foods were found uncovered in the cooler. The containers used to store the sushi seaweed wraps are extremely old and dirty. Please replace.

When covering foods, the material used must be clean and of food grade quality. All foods in coolers must be covered.

Inadequate Insect/Rodent Control:

The facility appears to have a fly problem. Several things need to happen to remove them from the facility: >All windows must be screened >All sink drains must be cleaned to remove a potential food source >At the end of the night, all rags must be kept in a sealed bag >A more secure container (airtight) is required for the empties and ideally these empties should be picked up twice a week The pest control company should be brought in to identify potential problem areas and to set up some fly traps in these problem areas. Some mouse droppings and a couple of dead mice (attached to glue boards) were observed in the office/storage area and along the shelves that run through the dining area up into the kitchen. These droppings/glue boards must be removed and the surfaces sanitized with a bleach solution. Please monitor the situation and if new droppings are observed inform the pest control company.

Improper Construction/Maintenance/Sanitation of Establishment:

The shelves in the prep area need to be cleaned. There is an extreme buildup of grease along the main cook line and on some of the equipment located across from the cook line. All of this grease buildup must be removed from the sides of the equipment, underneath the equipment, from the pipes that run along the wall and from the exhaust canopy. In order to prevent this magnitude of grease buildup, a sanitation schedule should be set up among the staff to ensure this cleaning is done on a regular basis. This includes regularly removing the metal slats from the exhaust system and cleaning them.
